You can do a regular stage-based rally against opponents, clocking the best times to win. The graphics are lovely and extremely detailed, whether you're in Europe, Africa or the U.S. I didn't dare play it, but there is a hardcore mode that turns off all assists and alternative camera angles, leaving you in your cockpit to drive by touch and feel, with only a straight-ahead view of the course. As tight as the steering is, when you miss a turn, it's quite easy to lose control of your car and never gain it back. But when you're traveling at well over 100 miles per hour, accidents do happen, and here's another way this game sets itself apart. I don't know what Codemasters did differently from other game publishers, but the physics in this game are more like real driving than other racers, and I love the rumbling of the controller when you go over a bridge or off-road. Of the three racers I've tried ( NASCAR 2011 and MotorStorm: Apocalypse), this game gets pole position for its sheer playability and realistic graphics and physics. At the easiest level, there were no complex stick movements or button combinations to memorize, and steering wasn't overly sensitive. McRae was a famed Scottish rally racer who died in a helicopter crash in 2007. At first blush, this third iteration of the game hasn't strayed far from its roots, though Colin McRae's name is nowhere to be found in the branding.

It's the successor to 2009's Dirt 2, which I didn't play, and the original Colin McRae Rally game I played on an old PC many years ago. Dirt 3 is about rally racing, and I like it.
